In a land ripe with burger-and-pizza beer joints, there is something very different about the DownTown City Tavern in Glens Falls.
Perhaps it’s the sweet patio or the 700-degree wood-fired oven that was lowered into the old Boston Candy Co. space with a crane in February. But it’s more likely to be the chemistry between owners David Britton and Craig Merrell, who seem to be having so much fun playing around with food ideas that they can face a hot kitchen and a crowded taproom with grace and humor.
We arrived without a reservation on a busy Sunday night when all the tables were full, yet Merrell swooped in and cheerfully offered to set us up on the patio, even though there wasn’t a server assigned for outdoor dining that night. The sunset was casting a rosy glow across the sky, and soon Merrell found an energetic young man who didn’t have problems running between our table and the ones he must have been serving inside.
